BIO
Second Front is the pioneering performance art group in the online avatar-based VR world, Second Life. Founded in 2006, Second Front quickly grew to its current 8 member troupe that includes Jeremy Owen Turner (Vancouver), Doug Jarvis (Victoria), Tanya Skuce (Vancouver), Gazira Babeli (Italy), Penny Leong Browne (Vancouver), Patrick Lichty (Chicago), Liz Solo (St. Johns) and Scott Kildall (San Francisco). Taking their influences from numerous sources, including Dada, Fluxus, Futurist Syntesi, the Situationist International and contemporary performance artists like Laurie Anderson and Guillermo Gomez-Pena, Second Front creates theatres of the absurd that challenge notions of virtual embodiment, online performance and the formation of virtual narrative. Created in 2006, they have already performed extensively, including in Vancouver, Chicago, New York, and has been featured in publications including SLate, Eikon, Realtime Arts (Australia), The Avastar (published by Axel-Springer, Germany) and most recently in Exibart (Italy).

(Second Front, Last Supper, gennaio 2007. Immagine della performance, courtesy gli artisti.)

Così scrive Domenico Quaranta in un articolo pubblicato in Queer (supplemento libri del quotidiano Liberazione), 18 febbraio 2007, numero 94, pp. IV–V. NET ART RELOADED: RICOMINCIO DA SECOND LIFE.

In Second Life, Man è uno dei membri fondatori di Secon Front.

In Second Life, è facile intuirlo, c'è arte di ogni tipo.

NO LAB in RMB City

“NO LAB in RMB City”
Cao Fei (SL: China Tracy) + MAP OFFICE (Gutierrez + Portefaix)

Meraviglioso!
Un cartello mi suggerisce "What Happens Here, Stays Here".

SLURL: http://slurl.com/secondlife/RMB%20City%202/97/170/21

Ecco una nota dell'autrice:

“NO LAB in RMB City” is a new collaboration between Cao Fei (SL: China Tracy) and MAP OFFICE created for Prospect.1 New Orleans, the largest biennial of international contemporary art ever organized in the United States. A special section of Cao Fei’s RMB City, a virtual art community under construction in Second Life, has been transformed into a stark, surreal vision of New Orleans. Based on MAP OFFICE’s research and drawings about post-Katrina New Orleans, the NO LAB parcel of land is a similar investigation into the landscape (physical, cultural, historic) of this unique city.

In Real Life, an iconic “carnival cart” designed by MAP OFFICE will display drawings, photographs and research materials, as well as a video and live projection of NO LAB in RMB City and computer terminals for public access. Inside Second Life, visitors (via avatars) can wander among the virtual shotgun houses and oak trees, and even drive a carnival cart through the empty streets, while encountering figures like Democratic Presidential Candidate Barack Obama and Waiting for Godot’s Pozzo and Estragon (in homage to Paul Chan's reenactment of Samuel Beckett's play in the Lower Ninth Ward). Of course, they will also experience a virtual storm that floods the entire land, and then recedes again, in an endless cycle…

Though distinct from the rest of RMB City by its striking black-and-white style (rendered by noted Second Life builder Sinewave Company), NO LAB is similarly a space for public interaction and dialogue. Though the full city is still under construction (opening in late 2008), avatars may also visit the Preview Center and the People’s Worksite to learn more about the city. Come visit NO LAB in Second Life and in New Orleans itself, to witness and participate in this ongoing discussion about urban space, society, and the trauma/drama of change.

Cao Fei (SL: China Tracy) (www.caofei.com)

Born 1978, Guangzhou/Lives and works in Beijing, China
Known for her multimedia installations and videos, Cao Fei is acknowledged as one of the key young artists emerging from Mainland China. She mixes social commentary, popular aesthetics, Surrealism, and documentary conventions in her films and installations. Her works comment on the rapid and chaotic changes that are occurring in all facets of Chinese society.

MAP OFFICE (Gutierrez + Portefaix) (www.map-office.com)

MAP OFFICE is an interdisciplinary design and research platform conceived by Laurent Gutierrez (1966, Casablanca) and Valérie Portefaix (1969, Saint-Etienne). Based in Hong Kong since 1996, both epitomize a new breed of architects who are rethinking the socio-political agencies of architecture. Their projects focus on territorial strategies of global spaces, involving a critical analysis of spatial and temporal anomalies and documentation of the ways in which human beings subvert and appropriate spaces for their own uses. A sense of play exists in much of their collaborative work, through a practice including text, drawing, photography, video and the creation of new platforms of communication.

"Pixellust (Chi5)." It is a three-dimensional "self"-portrait, rendered as a pixelated icon. Emulating the early days of digital art, each .5^3 meter prim is the equivalent of a pixel of color within an eight color palette, which is inspired by the standard 16 colors found on a VGA computer display. Attached is a zipfile containing screencaps of the work.

Bio
I'm a musician, and sometimes digital artist based in Brooklyn, New York. I am best known in Second Life for my contributions to group exhibitions in Odyssey, numerous architecture commissions--including the construction and design of the dual performance halls for the Das Klenes Field Recordings Festival in Berlin--and for my prominent role of "The Devil" in Gazira Babeli's machinima film, "Gaz of the Desert."

Frieda Korda about herself:
I started taking photos from the first day in SL.
I use myself as an object, since I'm an artmodel in RL this is more or less an extension of that.
I'm particularly interested in movement, expression and storytelling ...
I only use photoshop to make the composition, I don't add effects, neither use any filters to create my works.

Therese Carfagno says of herself:

I came to Second Life in February 2007. I soon got a job as a journalist, and got to meet the most interesting artists in SL. Seeing so much creativity inspired me to start taking pictures myself. I find that taking pictures helps me the look at the world a little closer – and there are so many wonders to see in SL.

I have no interest in calling myself an artist. I take snapshots. If I'm happy with the picture because of the motive, the colours, the people in it or anything, i upload it to Flickr. That's it. And if someone else like what I do, that's even better.
